Our Goals and Purpose
School Philosophy and Purpose
Above all our school is anchored in the true understanding of relationships. The success of each child is contingent upon the reciprocal efficacy of the Four Key Essential Relationships: the child's self, the teacher-child dynamic, the teacher-parent interaction, and the school community (nexus between these individuals and the broader community).
Each student is guided toward one goal: to design a theoretically perfect world and become a life-changer.
At our school, we know that each child comes into the world full of potential and curiosity, they are the questions the universe gives us and it is our responsibility to guide them to find their answers. We are dedicated to fostering a vibrant community where heart-driven relationships are at the core of everything we do, embracing diversity through culturally responsive learning to empower our students to think divergently and unlock their potential for creative problem-solving, all while cultivating a lasting love for learning through a focus on joy.
Through collaborative learning spaces and the strategic use of technology to enhance educational experiences, we empower our students to take ownership of their education and develop the skills necessary for lifelong success. By honoring the interconnectedness of beauty, honor, courage, and self, we ensure that our students emerge as compassionate, confident, and independent individuals ready to make meaningful and positive contributions to the world.
Our holistic approach to education integrates these tenets with our commitment to Equity, Innovative and Future-Ready :earning technologies, and Life Readiness. We strive to create a supportive and nurturing environment where every student can thrive academically, ethically, and emotionally. By providing personalized learning plans, robust mentorship programs, a wide range of extracurricular activities, and comprehensive support services, we support each student’s individual growth. Collaborative learning spaces and the strategic use of technology empower our students to take ownership of their education and develop the skills necessary for lifelong success. Through these comprehensive strategies, we honor the interconnectedness of beauty, honor, courage, and self, empowering our students to become compassionate, confident, and independent individuals ready to make meaningful contributions to the world.
OUR MODEL
Our school operates under a comprehensive model designed to support our mission and uphold our core philosophy centered on Beauty, Honor, Courage, and Self. Our model consists of two distinct yet interrelated components: a world-designing curriculum that is student-driven and full of infinite possibilities, and a social design framework aimed at eliminating major barriers to learning faced by our students today and in the future.
By providing a safe and nurturing environment, we prepare our students for life readiness and meaningful contributions to the world. We achieve this by implementing personalized learning plans tailored to each student's unique strengths and interests, offering robust mentorship programs that connect students with caring adults, and providing a wide range of extracurricular activities that encourage exploration and personal growth. Additionally, our dedicated support services, including counseling and academic advising, ensure that students receive the guidance they need to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
World Design School Educational Program
The WorldCommons School is an innovative, multi-year educational program that invites students to envision, design, and ultimately create an ideal world for humanity. On their very first day, students are presented with a profound challenge. The Challenge: Envision a bright, thriving new world on Earth—a future where humanity transcends current challenges to create a harmonious, flourishing society. What world do you see? How will you design a world where our hopes, dreams, and efforts shape a brighter future for generations to come?
Over the course of each year, students work individually and in cohorts to answer this question.
Interdisciplinary Learning at Its Core
Designing a new world is an inherently interdisciplinary task that requires a deep understanding of a wide range of subjects—mathematics, science, humanities, arts, and philosophy. This breadth ensures that students engage with every academic discipline, fostering a holistic learning experience. As they integrate knowledge from multiple fields, they continuously encounter new questions, driving an unending cycle of inquiry and discovery.
Skill Development Beyond Academics
The program emphasizes the development of essential 21st-century skills such as leadership, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving. By tackling real-world challenges and working together to design a future society, students learn how to navigate complex social, economic, and environmental issues, making them effective and empathetic leaders.
Focus on Inclusivity, Justice, and Environmental Consciousness
At the heart of the WorldCommons School is a commitment to creating a just, inclusive, and environmentally conscious community. The program encourages students to explore and address pressing social and environmental questions:
➔ How can food insecurity be eliminated for all students?
➔ What role does access to healthcare play in daily learning?
➔ How does poverty impact educational outcomes?
➔ Does student autonomy enhance learning experiences?
➔ How can traditionally marginalized students gain access to the best educators and technologies?
➔ How can we design sustainable systems that protect and rejuvenate Earth's ecosystems?
➔ What strategies can be implemented to combat climate change while ensuring fair access to resources for all?
➔ How do environmental challenges intersect with social equity, and what can we do to address them together?
By examining these questions, students learn to integrate principles of equity, justice, and environmental stewardship into their world-building process, preparing them to create a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
A Model for Tomorrow’s Education
The WorldCommons School goes beyond traditional learning. It provides an education for students by involving them directly in designing a more just, sustainable, and innovative world. This approach ensures that students are not passive recipients of knowledge but active creators of their own learning journey and future society.
Through the WorldCommons School, students are empowered to imagine and construct their ideal world—one that embodies equity, sustainability, and creative innovation. This program serves as a prototype for a new kind of education, one that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to lead and shape the world of tomorrow.
World-Design Curriculum Design
To fulfill our mission of empowering historically marginalized students to change the world, we engage our students in creating a theoretically functional and sound world throughout each year at our school. This is achieved through a multidisciplinary approach that reflects the beauty and complexity of the real world.
➔ Personalized Learning Plans: As part of our dedication to using innovative and Future-Ready technology, each student receives a tailored learning plan that aligns with their unique strengths, interests, and aspirations, ensuring that their educational journey is both meaningful and joyful.
➔ Integrated Curriculum: Our curriculum seamlessly blends literacy, mathematics, science, history, and the creative and performing arts, promoting a deep and holistic understanding of each subject.
➔ Socratic Questioning: We utilize a full-time Socratic questioning approach to stimulate critical thinking and encourage students to engage deeply with the material.
➔ Collaborative Projects: Students work on collaborative projects that require higher-order thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication, preparing them for real-world challenges.
➔ Historical Studies: To understand our present and design the future, we must have a deep appreciation for the past. Our Historical Studies program ensures that students gain a comprehensive understanding of historical events, cultures, and movements. This foundation prevents us from repeating past mistakes and empowers students to make informed decisions that shape a better future.
➔ Creative Exploration & Self-Discovery: Engage in immersive, hands-on projects in traditional arts such as music/instrumentals, handwork, woodworking, and painting to unlock personal creativity, enhance technical skills, and foster self-expression.
➔ Earth Connection & Environmental Stewardship: Forge a deeper bond with nature through monthly initiatives in plant cultivation, farm-based learning, and active participation in local environmental conservation projects, nurturing both ecological responsibility and sustainable living practices.
Student-Led and Student-Designed Curriculum
Who knows students better than students? Who knows what students need better than other students? We believe that the most effective curriculum is one that is led and designed by the students themselves. By involving students in the creation and continual development of their educational experiences, we ensure that their unique needs, interests, and aspirations are met. Our ever-changing curriculum is a dynamic process, allowing students to take an active role in shaping their learning paths, fostering ownership, creativity, and relevance in their studies. This student-centered approach not only enhances engagement and motivation but also prepares students to be proactive, innovative, and adaptable individuals ready to meet the challenges of the future.
Social Design
Our social design framework is meticulously developed to remove barriers to learning and ensure an equitable, supportive, and nurturing environment for every student.
➔ Justice in Practice and Inclusivity: We maintain a low student-to-teacher ratio of 10:1 in the early years, expanding thoughtfully in upper high school years to preserve personalized attention and support. We are committed to recruiting and retaining exceptional educators by offering competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits.
➔ Technologically Advanced Campus: Our campus is equipped with the latest technologies to maximize collaboration, communication, and creative thinking. This includes modern design and engineering labs, one-to-one technology access, and advanced educational tools.
➔ Student Autonomy: We empower students to take ownership of their learning through a Student Board of Directors and regular leadership opportunities. This autonomy fosters self-confidence, responsibility, and a sense of agency in their educational journey.
➔ Comprehensive Support Services: Our dedicated support services, including counseling, academic advising, and mentorship programs, ensure that students receive the guidance and assistance they need to thrive both academically and emotionally.
➔ Healthy and Supportive Environment: We provide free, healthy, and delicious meals, along with all necessary supplies and materials, removing financial barriers to learning and ensuring that students are well-nourished and prepared to engage fully in their education.
➔ Community Partnerships: We cultivate co-collaborative partnerships with community leaders, visionaries, business elites, and entrepreneurs, offering students invaluable opportunities to engage with real-world problems and innovative solutions.
Supporting Individual Growth
To support the individual growth of each student, our model incorporates the following strategies:
➔ Personalized Mentorship: Robust mentorship programs connect students with caring adults who guide their personal and academic development, fostering empathy, compassion, and self-awareness.
➔ Extracurricular Activities: A wide range of extracurricular activities encourages exploration and personal growth, allowing students to discover and develop their passions and talents.
